Warning, this May Trigger Debate

Warning this May Trigger Debate, 2017-2019

This extension of "Rituals of Commemoration" delves into a crucial question: Can we remain neutral? Is silence valuable?

Viewers engage by selecting a 25-pound charcoal black concrete block, resembling an inverted half-pyramid, engraved with names and dates of police violence victims in gold letters. Placing this block visibly – be it in a yard, office, or home – sparks dialogue, forging connections, and fostering understanding to help communities progress while staying connected to those we've lost. This project reimagines devotion and commemoration rituals, urging exploration, provocation, action, and finding purpose in our nation's issues.

Participants capture photos, documenting their involvement with the hashtag #ritualsofcommemoration.

Comprising 25 concrete blocks (to date), each 12W x 8H x 5D inches and 25 lbs., the inverted half-pyramid design, crowned with charcoal black and shimmering gold, bears names and dates of Black individuals killed by police since 1979.

Photographed participation symbolizes memory affirmation, honoring lost lives, and shaping meaning through action.
