Letterpress, pencil and tissue paper on newspaper
This mixed-media work on newsprint boldly declares a message of resistance with the phrase “PEACE NO WAR” letterpress printed across a full-page newspaper article of the New York Times, Business, Tuesday. The words are monumental—PEACE and WAR are set in translucent, overlapping blue and purple block letters, bookending the vivid red “NO” in the center. The type’s scale and opacity interact with the printed news beneath it, forcing the viewer to read between the lines—both literally and metaphorically.
The piece uses layering—both visual and conceptual—to great effect. The choice of newspaper as substrate emphasizes the media’s role in shaping public perception, while the integration of tissue paper, wax pencil, and letterpress adds texture, urgency, and material contrast. This is a protest in print—a handmade rebuttal to the mass-produced messaging of war, policy, and power.
