19” H x 12.5” W (48.26 x 31.75 centimeters)
Mixed- media letterpress, linoleum print, 100 lbs. French paper (Chipboard Kraft)
Created on high-quality 100 lbs. paper and inspired by Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, one of the most consistently banned books in the United States. It is banned in 12 Florida counties as of October 2023.
This mixed media work features bold, overlapping typography on a soft pink background, with the large purple initials “TM” anchoring the composition—an unmistakable reference to Toni Morrison. Words like “Pecola,” “Nobel Prize,” “1993,” and “literature” float around a cracked yellow shape resembling a flower, the yellow Marigold, symbolizing the loss of innocence and hope in a world that is cruel and unjust to black girls. They also represent the failure of nature to nurture and heal the wounds inflicted by racism and sexism.
At the bottom, a red arrow points upward above a stamped dedication: “DEDICATED TO TONI MORRISON’S THE BLUEST EYE BANNED IN FLORIDA 2021–2024”—linking literary excellence with censorship and resistance.
